File Readers

To view, download & upload files using newsfeeds requires a filereader.

Just like viewing the internet requires Netscape or I.E. Accessing the file groups requires a reader.
Not long ago readers were complicated and hard to use but that has completely changed. Readers now are easy to setup and even easier to view, upload & download --mp3's, movies, photos, games etc. either one at a time or in large amounts.

Most newfeed (filegroup) providers supply a reader along with instructions for setting up and use , but you are free to use any reader for access. Some are FREE and some cost.

XNews-FREE - EASY TO USE
Xnews is a news reader that is 100% GNKSA 2.0 (Good Net Keeping Seal of Approval) compliant. It comes with many useful features, including Plonk file (aka bozo bin), quick and advanced filtering options, support for multiple servers, remappable keyboard and more. Subscribed newsgroups can be organized in folders for easy navigation. Xnews also offers header caching, permanent archival of messages and support for binary attachments

Newsgreed-FREE
NewsGreed is a small (about 120 Kbytes!) Java program which automatically downloads binary files (such as MP3, AVI, MPEG, JPG, ...) posted in Usenet newsgroups - it supports automatic reassembly of files split among different articles and different newsgroups too!
As it is written in Java, NewsGreed runs on any platform which supports it, such as Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris (and maybe even freeBSD...).
Moreover, NewsGreed is free, open source software and is distributed under the GPL!

BNR-FREE
BNR downloads and decodes binary articles and saves them on your hard drive to the directory of your choice. BNR can also download text articles, but other news readers are probably better suited to this task. BNR will run on PC hardware running either Windows or Linux operating systems.

WinVN-FREE
My favorite News reader WinVn has, alas, been dormant in the development department for the last few years. I initially updated the original NASA maintained source from here, but later found a much improved German version maintained by Peter Heirich. I've incorporated my earlier changes into these Win9x/NT & Win3.x versions. I used Jordan Russell's nice, free, installation program INNO Setup to handle WinVn's install/uninstall. Choose the WinVn version to download
